  • God wants to get to a person through you because when you pray the Holy Spirit of God flows into you and you become a lens that can focus on that person you are holding up.

  1. Going back to the same versus in scripture to learn something new and become instruments of God’s powers.

August 7, 2013; Creation Festivals, Enumclaw, WA

Sermon Outline (click to download):

1. “I’m here to do two things” (1) get you to commit to Jesus (2) get you to sponsor a child
2. There is a difference between being a believer and being a disciple.
3. Story about when he was in an airport in Richmond, VA and a man was “working the crowd with the four spiritual laws”. The man asked someone when he was saved and the man responded that he wasn’t exactly sure but it was about 2,000 years ago, but he just found out about it recently.
4. Story about when his son took a group of tough youth on a retreat. “If he can be a Christian, anyone can be a Christian.”
5. What gives you eternal life is not your righteousness, but his sacrifice.
6. Encourages people to sponsor a child. On judgment day he will ask you “I was hungry did you feed me, I was naked did you clothe me, I was sick did you care for me?”
7. Story about when he was in Haiti and saw all of the homeless children. Then raised funds to build a residence hall for 40 of them, but 300 showed up. Had to choose. Mad at God, but not it’s God who doesn’t care; it’s his disciples who aren’t doing enough.
8. Story about a student at Eastern University. Went to Harvard law school, could have worked on Wall Street for a very high salary but instead went to Alabama and defends the poor. “You don’t know how good you are. You had all the allurements of a successful career and you turned it all down to go where Jesus wanted you too – because that’s the will of God”
9. Story about another student named Charlie. They were in Haiti at a hospital. Charlie said he would go on to med school and come back as a doctor to help, but now is a cosmetic surgeon. “God gave you a vision, God gave you a dream, and you were going to do something magnificent for God – and look at you. You sold out.”
10. “Are you ready to turn down God’s calling?” Unless you are willing to forsake everything and take up your cross and follow me, you can’t be part of my kingdom.
11. I’m not calling upon you to believe in Jesus, I’m calling upon you to surrender your life to Jesus and to invite Christ to be a living presence in you.”
12. “When my people make this world into the new place that I want it to be…”
13. 20 years from now, most of you will have messed up your lives. Because you’ve been seduced by the system and you haven’t been committed to Jesus.
14. Story about folk singer in the 60s and his song about boxes that are all the same. Reads Romans 12. “In short, I’m calling you to break out of the boxes that the society is already putting you in.”
15. Story about when he was in high school and met a Pentecostal girl. There was no question that she was filled with the Holy Spirit. Reads from John 3. You can’t put the Holy Spirit in a box. Encountered Holy Spirit when introduced to the writings of Saint Ignatius.
16. Story about his son when he was 10 saying, “I’m going to pray. Does anyone want anything?” Are our prayers just sophisticated versions of that? You should ask for what you need, but you also have to be willing to listen to God.
17. Says that every morning he spends time just focusing on Jesus. C.S. Lewis says “the animals come in and devour.” It takes a while to stop thinking about all of the distractions.
18. “The real question is not do you believe in Jesus, but are you willing to start surrendering?”
19. Story about when he was speaking in Honolulu. Hungry at odd hours because of time change, finds an open place and several prostitutes came in. One says that the next day was her birthday. Organized a party for her. They asked what kind of church he came from, responded “I preach at a church that throws birthday parties for whores at three in the morning.” That is the kind of church that Jesus came to create.
20. “If all you get out of this is some great music, it’s not enough.” You have to take action.
21. Quotes Mother Theresa, “We all can’t do big things for God, but we can all do small things in love.”
22. Our cultural idea of love is purely romantic. All a wedding does is creating the possibility for a marriage, but a marriage is what you create after.
23. Through the power of the Holy Spirit you are able to not just look at a person, but to look into a person. Jesus was able to look into people, connecting with them.
24. Story about when teaching at the University of Pennsylvania and met the “duck lady”. They made eye contact and connected through the power of the Holy Spirit. She stopped quacking and spoke.
25. “God wants you not only to believe in him, but Christ wants to be in you tonight.” He wants to fill you and touch other people through you.
26. “He will make you into somebody that is committed.”
27. Story about an evangelist who always went to the same town and every year the same man would come down the aisle and shout “fill me”. A woman shouted “Don’t do it Lord, he leaks!” We all leak.
28. Story about when he visited two Eastern students in Zimbabwe. They followed a truck through the streets early in the morning. Men would wake up the children sleeping in the streets. Some didn’t wake up and they would pile them in the truck. Then piled all the dead bodies and burned them.
29. I want you to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I want you to be concerned. I want you to be able to carry out your commitments. Quotes John 15. Without Jesus we can’t do anything.
30. Talks about when students say they aren’t returning next semester because they need time “to find themselves – I need to peel the personas that society has prescribed for me and come to the essence of my humanity.” But what if when you peel that away, there is nothing left?
31. The essence of who you are cannot be discovered, can only be created through commitments.
32. Story about a friend who is a pastor in California and one of his deacons.
33. Jesus wants to come into you and live through you and make you. He wants to make you into someone who has intensive concern for the needs of others.
34. “I’m asking you if you are willing to make that decision. Are you willing to say that I came here as a believer, but I know that there is more to it than that and I want Christ to be a powerful presence in me.”
35. Encourages people to sponsor a child through World Vision. “The future of kids is in your hands…I wonder what Christianity is all about. Is there one kid in the world whose life is being changed because of you?”

Sermon Outline (click to download):

  1. You know you’re old sex joke.
  2. Story about asking students why Jesus came into the world.  Any number of answers you can affirm.  But Jesus would say “I have come to declare that the Kingdom of God is at hand.”
  3. All of his parables have to do with the Kingdom.
  4. When he taught his disciples to pray, thy Kingdom come on Earth.
  5. Came into this world to change it from what it is into what it ought to be.  For the reason he created the church.  The church is the instrument through which God does his work.
  6. Church begins its work by talking about the salvation story.  Have to share the faith, which mainline denominations are not so good at these days.
  7. Story about being a counselor at a junior high camp.  Joke about there really being a purgatory.  Kids picked on this boy, Billy, that couldn’t walk right or talk right.  Boys voted for him to do the morning devotion in chapel so that they could laugh at him.  Didn’t bother Billy.  “Jesus loves me, and I love Jesus.”
  8. Dead silence in chapel, tears running down the cheeks of the junior high boys.  Started a revival.  Tried everything to reach those boys, nothing got through.  Baseball player whose batting average had gone up since he started praying.  Nothing worked until Billy.  If God can use a spastic kid to preach the message of love for Christ, how dare you say that’s not my thing?
  9. Are you willing to become a witness for Christ?
  10. Story about a friend pastor in Honolulu.  Kid in the church was in a bad accident, lost an arm.  Kid went into Judo lessons, after learning the basics, the kid spent day after day learning one move.  The Sensei entered in him into the state tournament.  Kid wins, doesn’t understand how he did it.  Sensei “The one move you know is the most effective move.   And the only defense against that move is to grave your opponents left arm.
  11. The Bible contends that your weakness may be a strength.
  12. Story: Jean Thompson, school teacher: “Boys and girls I love you all the same.”  Didn’t actually like everybody the same. Teddy was a bad student, she didn’t like him.  She took delight in his bad grades.  Second grade: Teddy is a good student, but too serious.  Third grade: Teddy’s mother died, Teddy withdrew.  Teddy gave an old bracelet and cheap perfume to the teacher for Christmas.  They were his mother’s.  After he left, she asked the spirit to enter her.  The next day, she was renewed, reached out with care and compassion to everyone.  By the end of the year Teddy caught up with a lot of students.
  13. Teddy moved away.  Many years later, she received a postcard. “I’m graduating from high-school, I wanted you to be the first to know.”  Four years later “I’m second in my class, graduating from college.”  “As of today I am Teddy Stolard, MD.  Wanted you to be the first to know.”  “I’m getting married, I wanted you to be the first to know.  You’re the only family I have left.”
  14. God’s work was being done through a woman who surrendered to the indwelling presence of Christ. Doing God’s will on Earth as it is in Heaven.
  15. I’m not asking you to become a believer.  Something far more serious, surrender to Christ, “I’m yours. Transform me.”
  16. We radicalize students at Eastern.  Parent came in, mad about the effect Eastern had on his son. “I’m willing to be Christian, up to a point.” Change hymns “up to a point my savior leads me.”
  17. Quote by Bonhoeffer, “Jesus calls a person to come and die, give without reservation, instrument of love and justice.”
  18. When Christ invades, there will be many evidences, one: constantly your heart will be broken by things that break the heart of Jesus.
  19. Took students to Haiti.  Priest got us up at 6:00AM, something he wanted them to see.  Flu epidemic, in Haiti, where children are malnourished, when you get influenza you die.  In the morning, woman came out carrying the children who had died that last night.  At the edge of town there was a long ditch, and they laid in 17 kids who had died.  Among them, my student Josh, 6’6, 240lbs.  Said he was violent.  Fists clenched, chin trembling.  His heart had been broken.
  20. If you’re going to be the church, the things that break the heart of Jesus break your heart.  Not only respond on the individual level, you have to do so on the Justice level.
  21. Justice is love transformed into social policy.
  22. Mainline denominations need to get better at evangelizing, but they need credit for their justice, and it has cost them dearly.
  23. Here, Martin Luther King is the big justice figure.  I remember when that name would get people to leave a church.
  24. Same with woman.  Lost a lot of members when the decision was made that woman had been denied the right to preach, which they should be able to do.  The NT is full of woman preaching.  Started on the day of Pentecost.
  25. Galatians 6:28
  26. No more inferiority, barrier is taken down, rights belong to all people
  27. Lately, losing more members over the gay issue.  I’m a conservative, my wife is wrong, but the church has created a lot of pain and agony for gay and lesbians, and for their parents as well.
  28. In high school there was a gay kid named Roger.  We humiliated him at every turn.  I was a part of that.  After Phys Ed we’d take showers, but Roger was afraid to.  But when he did take his turn, we’d whip him with towels after he got out.  I wasn’t there the day they took him into the corner of the shower and urinated on him.  That night he hung himself.  I knew I wasn’t a Christian, because I would have stood up for Roger’s been his friend.
  29. I was afraid.  If you become the friend of a Roger, you lose a lot of other friends.  I wish I could go back and do it again. Then he could say, “Well done good and faithful servant.”
  30. Being his voice will cost you.  But it will change the world.
  31. You can change the world today for one kid.  Call to sponsor a Compassion child.
  32. The church gets a lot of bad publicity, but we’re good people.  25 years ago, 80% of the planet was illiterate, now it’s 20%.  1/6 used to not have clean water, now its 1/12.  Used to be 45,000 a day dying from diseases and malnutrition, now 30,000.
  33. University of Georgia, literature course they have to read Elliot’s the Wasteland.  “This is the way the world will end, not with a bang but with a whimper.”  Didn’t know what he was talking about.  I’ve read the Bible, we win!
  34. The kingdoms of this world shall become the kingdom of God.
  35. God wants to work through this church, I hope you’re responsive.
  36. You’re nice considering you’re white Methodists.
  37. Whit people can be tough.  Speaking at a church in PA. On the way out I got the ultimate compliment: Old guy shook my hand, “We wouldn’t be opposed to having you back again.”
  38. My church they let you know how you’re doing. Deacons yell “Preach on brother!”
  39. White Methodists don’t yell “Keep going,” they yell “Stop…”
  40. Once a year we have a preach-off.  I did good.  I got so good I wanted to take notes on me.  Pastor said “You did alright.” But he did me in with one line, over and over. “It’s Friday but Sunday’s coming.”

Two thousand years ago, Jesus was born. You know that. Two thousand years ago, God broke into history and He lived among us. And we beheld His glory.

One that comes up first and foremost is that He came to reconcile us to God, to go to Calvary’s cross and take upon Himself the punishment for all the sins that we committed. He came to give us salvation, even though we don’t deserve it.
