Spirituality for the Rest of Us
Tony delivered this sermon at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY on August 11, 2009
- Students come to my office in mid-May
- “I’m not coming back next semester”, “I need time to find myself”
- What if we are like onions? If we peal all the layers society has prescribed to us, you may find you don’t have anything inside
- There is no self waiting to be discovered; Self is waiting to be created
- Self is created through commitment
- This is the call of the Gospel: Commitment to Jesus
- “Who so ever seeks to find himself will loose himself, but who so ever looses himself for me will find himself”
- Compassion and love is something we must do
- Compassion is not just about feeling, it is a verb too
- Compassionate hearts brings to compassionate acts, but compassionate acts also lead to compassionate hearts
- Story about Arthur Forbs
- Arthur Forbs asks for his pastor’s calls in the house
- Day after day, the Pastor came to visit Arthur
- When Arthur died, Pastor cried; he was seduced into loving Arthur
- Don’t wait for compassionate feelings to act compassionately: Act compassionately, and the acts will transform you
- Story of two military friends
- His friend saved his life in Vietnam war
- Now, he travels wherever his friend goes to help him with his condition
- “After what he did for me, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for him”
- Difference between a “believer” and a “disciple”
- A disciple is that who says, “after what you did for me, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you”
- Jesus said, “go and make out disciples of me”, not believers
- Make small acts of compassion
- We don’t know what it means to be alone,
- “Me and my Shadow” poem
- “If you are faithful in little things, I will make you the ruler of great things”
- Prayer:
- Live out the compassion Jesus demonstrated to us
- May Your spirit work in us, both to will and to do Your good pleasure
